The title and much of the inspiration for this solo cimbalom piece is taken from Sholeh Wolpé’s excellent translation of Forugh Farrokhzad’s poem. The music is gentle and expressive, “distant sounds” moving freely “unfixed and vagrant like a drifting breeze”. It is intricate, often hearing two ‘voices’ – doves, in the poem – “crossing in the wind”. Introverted and shadowy, we are isolated in an internal world, caught between day and night – an onerous, mysterious “strange land”.
